Formula-Drive Excel Chart Title (‘Duh’ moment of the week)

March 26, 2009

For some reason, Excel 2007 doesn’t  make it obvious (to me at least) how to have a chart title depend on a cell in the spreadsheet.  Everything else in the chart can be driven by cell reference; why not the title?

Of course, it can be driven by cell reference:

  1. Click on the chart title to select it
  2. Click once in the formula bar, and type in an equals (‘=’) sign
  3. Click on the cell you want to use the value from
  4. Hit Enter

Duh.

  1. Good tip. I like your new header btw.

Thanks for this. I was trying to figure out how to do this for about an hour now. I wouldn’t call it a ‘duh’ moment. Previous versions of Excel included the title values in the “chart data” pop up. To me this is one of the many un-hancements of 2007. Definitely some improvements, but quite a few regressions as well, IMO.
